MARNE - A timely caution turned into an unlucky break for Gary Sherman in
Saturday's Request Foods-GFS 200 at Berlin Raceway.
The Holt driver qualified 15th and finished 13th in his first race of the
ARCA RE/MAX season, which is 12 races into its 23-race schedule.
"We were running in the top five, top 10 all night long, but you're limited
to how many tires you can use in ARCA, and we saved a set to use later and
hoped for a late caution," Sherman said. "We got a caution with 20 laps to
go, I was going through a caution, then the leader got into the back of me,
spun me out and I was scored a lap down when I was on the lead lap."
Sherman's team, Cleary Motorsports, protested the result, but the results
were not changed.
Sherman said Brian Keselowski, who won the race, was the only other driver
who saved a set of tires for the final push.
Sherman's team runs a part-time schedule and is next expected to compete in a September race in Salem, Ind.
